Now, however, Californians interested in being introduced to New York riesling have a novel alternative.
Napa Valley and Sierra foothill winemaker Scott Harvey, while best known for his brash zinfandels, is a longtime riesling fan, having been introduced to the grape and the wine in Germany, where he was born and where he trained in enology. Germans have been turning out noble rieslings for generations.
Harvey also was a judge at last year's New York Wine & Food Classic, and while in the Finger Lakes area arranged to buy a ton and a half of riesling grapes to be picked that fall at John and Ann Martini's Anthony Road Wine Company overlooking Seneca Lake.
In Napa, Harvey transformed the fruit into an off-dry and zesty riesling at Monticello Winery.
Nice article, as always. Worth the free registration....
