WTN: Dumpster Diving

Spent some lovely time yesterday in the pub garden drinking pints of summery and refreshing St. Peter’s Golden Ale but when the rains came it was more appropriate to order bottles of Trappistes Rochefort 8 which was comforting and balanced yet still managed to work up our appetites.

So my friend insisted that we go for fish and chips at his favorite shop near his house in South London. And he also insisted that we switch to wine. So he was proud to show off his local wine bar/shop where he was sure that I would find some gems to tempt my palate. Instead, I was off into Dumpster Diving.

Well, not quite. There were a few well-chosen wines proudly displayed but beyond our budget of group carousing for the evening. So sorting through the 5% of the shop that was palatable, I chose the 2006 Fevre Chablis which was fine but a bit flabby and tropical and only hinted at snapping into focus during the 30-40 minutes it took us to finish the bottle.

Luckily the crowd was more convinced by my selection of 2005 Rudolf Fürst Spätburgunder Tradition which was a clean pure ripe jellied jewel of a small-scale refreshing and focused wine. No reason to accuse this wine of being complex but everything in proportion for what it was and the table was happy.

Rahsaan, as you are in London, are you thinking RSJ? And hows about a visit to Sampler. Bus 73 to Seven Sisters, get off at Islington Green!!

I really like Fürst, though I don't have extensive experience. Klingenberger is the spätburgunder that I took quite a fancy toward, but I suppose dumpster divers can't be choosers . . .

Fine shop and they always have interesting stuff although to my tastes the 'fairness' of the pricing varies across bottles. Still, I guess other people love it for the tasting bottles, which I don't really explore.

Klingenberger is the spätburgunder that I took quite a fancy toward. . .

Aha. There was another cuvee from Fürst although am not sure which one. It was twice the price and our group needed something cheaper and convivial. But it was still 'fairly' priced compared to some of these Super Expensive Spätburgunders one sees in the States and I might do more explorations eventually for myself..

I did not pay too much attention to the open bottles either.

The Sunday farmer's market in the area is not too shabby either. Really top notch in my opinion.
