1995 Clape Cornas
Starts off sour and fierce but with a few hours of air begins to show more finesse and elegance. That said, it remains blocky and nowhere near as expressive as the 95 Verset from last week but by the end it is increasingly captivating and hints at future potential. I guess we should have decanted!
2004 Alzinger Steinertal Riesling Smaragd
This shows plenty of big brawny shoulders and at times is too heavy on the alcohol. At other times the fine-grained firm fruit is apparent but it still needs to get itself sorted.
2003 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #11
This on the other hand shows pretty well sorted out. Juicy and flowery fruit but brisk and refreshing (surprisingly so for 2003) and an easy elegant pleasure to crunch down while watching the Lakers do work.
2007 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spätlese Portz
Another fun pleasure with plenty of flowery fruit and slakey mineral refreshing notes plus the deepish fruit with rednotes (Cristian refers to them as 'watermelon' tastes). Bottoms up!
