Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2001 - (note done from memory)
This wine had a darker purple color as some of the Chiantis that I know. The initial nose was of sandalwood and ripe cherry. After the wine was open for about 30 minutes it showed a great earthiness in the glass, almost overpowering the fruit. The wine was low on tannin but the acidity carried the great tastes all the way through.
Although this was not an extraordinary wine, the flavor profile won me over (personal preference). This was one of my favorite wines so far this year.
I enjoyed this with cappellini alla pesto and pizza with red wine salami, carmelized red onion, roasted peppers and black olives.
Out on the terrace at a local Italian restaurant, it was a great dining experience. This is how summer should be!
