Finally, Kaefferkopf Grand Cru?

by Bill Hooper » Fri Jul 21, 2006 9:25 pm

I just found out that in 2006 the Kaefferkopf vineyard was finally granted AOC Grand Cru status (or finally ratified after 22 years). I think it's great, but does anyone know how this transpired? Was the whole vineyard recognized or just the granite portion? This has long been considered one of the finest vineyards in Alsace and it's about time. Tilt your glass to #51.

Prost!

Sorry, Bill, I have no idea about which parts of Kaefferkopf (or ithe whole) has been classified, but I know legislation and the mechanisms of lobbying quite well. I would bet my entire cellar that the strictest possible solution was not the one to be finally adopted.
