WTN: Cafaro Cab and Selvapiana Chianti

by Brian K Miller » Wed Dec 03, 2008 11:56 am

Being in the midst of a "cellar sort," I discovered a bottle of 2002 Cafaro Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1999 Cafaro Riserva was one of the "OMG" wines that inflicted me with this obsessesion :? 8)

Anyway, the 2002 is not in any way a Napa Fruit Bomb. This is a balanced, low key, and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon that is more about smooth mouth feel (with some nice tannic structure still), earthyness, and a fine whisper of dark, black currant fruit. Nose shows a little hint of savoryness or meatiness-just a hint of brett, perhaps? Delicious note of complexity, though. Tasted blind, my uneducated palate might guess Cru Bourgeois! Very, very earthy-it could actually benefit froma little more fruit, but that may reflect warm cellaring This shows better than their neighbor vineyard's product, the 2003 Signorello Cab. Solid 90 points.

Selvapiana Chianti Ruffina 2004. I have to admit I've been spoiled lately by the extremely delicious Cab/Sangio blends I've been pulling from my cellar. This was not bad in any way-no confected fruit, no "sweetness," plenty of acidity. I just found it a little boring and under-fruited. Storage can't be blamed here, as I've not had the bottle for very long. Maybe I am just used to richer Chiantis like Felsina and Fontodi? 83 points.
