WTN: Allegrini 'La Grolla' 2001 Veronese IGT

by Peter May » Mon Jul 03, 2006 11:20 am

La Grola
Veronese IGT
Allegrini
13.5%

Dark ruby, looking young for a 2001

Warm floral rose. Taste of blueberries with fruit acids on a dry finish

Plain uninformative label.
According to the menu and the web it is a blend of local varieties Corvina, Rondillo and Sangiovese plus Syrah - which explains its IGT classification I suppose.

Pleasantly enjoyable, but would have benefited from 15-minutes in an ice- bucket.
Web also says Parker rated it 90

€26 in restaurant in Sirmione Italy
(and €15 in nearby wine shop)

So many wines need a little chill when you're outside in the hot summer sun. At least here in DC and I guess in Italy too. Sounds like you're still enjoying the vacation. I can't really tell how much you enjoyed this wine though.

It was pleasant - but not more . I expected to get much more depth and/or some excitement. It wasn't a wine that made me stop and say 'wow' -- and that has happened a few times already here.

I said to Jo, that I didn't think we'd remember this wine in a day or so, whilst the inexpensive Groppello we had a week ago is fresh in our minds, and the 'Gatta Negus' (WTN posted) of a couple of nights ago is insisting we return to the same restaurant to experience it again.

And yet RP gave it 90 we later discovered......

You and I care for what reason? I like Allegrini's but I'm not willing to pay too much for them. They are quaffable. Which is pretty much what I hear you saying. However, when you are in Itally, one hopes for a bit more. Sounds like you found it. Enjoy! (If I new Italian I'd use it.)
