Lunchbox-Friendly Pinot Grigio in a TetraPak

OK, this is "old" news, i.e. it's from the May 11th SF Chronicle, so I hope I'm not being redundant. Still, Robin has been chatting about Pinot Grigio so I thought this might be interesting to some of you:

In fact, I quite enjoyed the merlot month here. I was shaking my head at first but I came across some nice ones. The Montes Alpha, plus the 2 Canadians..Cedar Creek and the Sandhill. Now I am ready for some summer sippers.

Oh, yes, my dirty little buddies! I've been getting scores of Lesser Goldfinches and many a pale adult. They toss more thistle on the deck than they eat and poop quite a bit. It's adorable!

Speaking of weirdness, have you seen pink Pinot Grigio? I have seen this at the state store but have not had any courage to buy it:

Pink Pinot Grigio I have not seen. But last night when I ran out to the store I saw Sutter White Cabernet Sauvignon. I was aghast. And then I checked it out on the web and found out that even Beringer has a White Cabernet Sauvignon and a White Merlot in addition to the well-known White Zinfandel. I guess I've been living under a rock all these years. Madonna mia!

Oh, sure, they call it Blanc de Noirs or Vin Gris or Rose, but it's the same thing as that White Merlot or White Cabernet. And while I'd suspect the brands you mentioned wouldn't make any of us around here thrilled, there are some pretty good producers of all of those mentioned above.

And white Syrah, don't forget that.

How's about a Beaujolais style Sangiovese? Go here 2004 Santano Sangiovese and scroll down to the middle of the page. I actually like this stuff, even though I get get some major mal di testa when I drink it.

I hope that the pinot grigio outperforms the 2003 trebbiano that I tried from them in Tetra-Pak. Of course, it was being cleared out at Grocery Outlet, so that could have been an early sign.

I have a rather wine-savvy friend who swears by the specials in the Grocery Outlet. Just yesterday he IM'ed me and advised me to buy some Rosemount Estate Shiraz for $3.99 a bottle. Hmmmmm ....

We've got a GO near here in Pleasant Hill and I did buy some wine there once, but it was such a long time ago that I don't remember what it was. Well at GO it's always "caveat emptor."

By the way, did they have a tiny straw attached to the package of Trebbiano?

I once saw an article about a pink Gewurztraminer. Never had a chance to try it, though.

Regarding all this "pink" talk: Remember that there actually is a merlot blanc grape. According to Jancis Robinson, there are still a few thousand acres of it planted, mostly in Bourg and Blaye. It has no relationship to "real" merlot, other than the shape of the leaves. It doesnt' appear to have much merit, either, other than its ability to produce very high yields of rather boring juice.

I received a four-pack of samples from Three Thieves -- barely palatable. If someone would put decent wine in these packages, they'd be great to take on hunting/fishing/hiking/boating ventures.

The Three Thieves would make nice targets -- pretty purple spray when you blast them with your 7 mm Rem Mag.

What's the size of serving in one? How many mls?
