WTN: Best Syrah at NZ's Royal Easter Wine Show

by Sue Courtney » Sat Mar 25, 2006 12:08 pm

Vidal Soler Hawkes Bay Syrah 2004
Deep, dark and savoury with an impenetrable purple-red colour, rose pepper and chocolate on the nose and beautifully integrated polished oak in the palate with fine-grained succulent tannins, chocolate, juicy berries, exotic peppery spices and rose petals lingering on the gorgeously long, dry finish. Beautifully concentrated. A benchmark.
14.5% alcohol by volume on the label and sealed with a screwcap. About $44 a bottle in NZ.

Awarded the trophy for the Champion Syrah and the Trophy for the Champion Wine of the Show, at the 2006 Royal Easter Wine Awards announced in Auckland, New Zealand last week.

Made by Rod McDonald of Vidal Estate, part of the Villa Maria group, and named after Joseph Soler, an early winemaker in the region.
Incidentally, Craggy Range 'Le Sol' derives its name from the same chap.

Cheers,
Sue

Sue do you happen to know if this wine is exported to the US? If so, who is the exporter?

Many thanks, Bob

Hi Bob, That I do not know and as it is now early Sat morning here, it is something I would not be able to find out until Monday. However I am going to a tasting of Hawkes Bay wines next Tuesday so something I must ask everyone, including Vidal, is "Do you export to the USA?".
Cheers,
Sue

Bob, I checked Winezap and Winesearcher and there's no sign of this wine in the U.S. yet., at least according to the sources they poll.

Bob,
Vidal Wines will start shipping to the United States in September this year.
The Syrah may not be available, however, as quantities made are still quite low. If there do send one, it is likely to be the 'estate' level wine rather than the 'Soler', as not much of the top level is made at any time. Vidal Wines are already available in Canada.
Check out the 'Where to Buy' on http://www.vidal.co.nz.
Cheers,
Sue
