Vidal Soler Hawkes Bay Syrah 2004
Deep, dark and savoury with an impenetrable purple-red colour, rose pepper and chocolate on the nose and beautifully integrated polished oak in the palate with fine-grained succulent tannins, chocolate, juicy berries, exotic peppery spices and rose petals lingering on the gorgeously long, dry finish. Beautifully concentrated. A benchmark.
14.5% alcohol by volume on the label and sealed with a screwcap. About $44 a bottle in NZ.
Awarded the trophy for the Champion Syrah and the Trophy for the Champion Wine of the Show, at the 2006 Royal Easter Wine Awards announced in Auckland, New Zealand last week.
Made by Rod McDonald of Vidal Estate, part of the Villa Maria group, and named after Joseph Soler, an early winemaker in the region.
Incidentally, Craggy Range 'Le Sol' derives its name from the same chap.
Cheers,
Sue
