WTN: Winner Riesling from Washington

2005 Eroica, Riesling, Columbia Valley, Washington, $22, 25,000 cases. A special partnership between German and American winemakers, this is usually at the top of Washington Rieslings. Light gold in color, the nose is packed with pure peach aromas. Off-dry at 1.6 percent residual sugar, the acidity manages to carry it pretty well. You’ll get a blast of peaches in the mouth as well, which lingers endlessly on the palate; 89/89.

I first tried 2000 Eroica about 4 1/2 years ago, and found it to be truly captivating. Then the 2001 vintage showed up and I found myself quite disappointed. I haven't tried it since that time. Is it time to come back?

Clark, you echo my sentiments. The first one was pretty good, then they seemed to go down. This one has returned to the top. It actually has some acidity -- my main complaint with New World Rieslings.

Another point. You won't find the petrol/slate nuances of Germany that I love. For the same price point, I can get some pretty nice Spatlese wines.
