WTN: PN puzzle

by John Treder » Sat May 10, 2008 10:06 pm

I picked up a couple of bottles of Porter Creek "Fiona Hill" RRV PN 2002 at the winery, back in October 2005, and got around to trying it a couple of nights ago.
It was awkward, a little petillant on opening and an acidic character and somewhat astringent feel to my cheeks. Good fruit behind it. Much better after a couple of hours. I put the cork in it and set it next to an open north-facing window in my bedroom. After a couple of days, much, much better! Earthy, moderately ripe, very much a PN brightness. The second pass was pretty much what I thought I was buying. In 2005, there was a lot of fresh fruit and considerable tannin, and those have properly moderated. But I'm wondering what brought about the petillance and apparent acidity and general reticence. Are those signs of "dumb"? I have the other bottle and now I'm wondering whether to put on the mental "after a while" list or on the mental "next time it seems like the right idea" list.
13.7% alcohol. Bought at the winery

Petillance sounds like refermentation or some other problem that is not just a question of being dumb/closed.

But, I'm no scientist.

I thought I'd read that petillance was usually a result of continuing fermentation.
Maybe the other bottle needs to go on the "don't panic, don't ignore" list.
