WTN: I have found the green! ('04 Bachelet Bourgogne)

by David M. Bueker » Fri May 09, 2008 7:42 pm

2004 Bachelet Bourgogne
But...wait...I really like it! This wine is like a theoretical cross between Cotes du Rhone and Bourgogne. It's fascinating and delicious. There's lively cherry fruit with a minty/herbal element that just makes the package for me. Wonderful.

Bachelet and Arnoux get mentioned a lot for the green notes. Good to know that it can be a feature; I'll have to look for some.

I don't know whether to post in the thread where you did or did not find greenness, so here it arbitrarily goes. I love a touch of greenness in my wines because it is refreshing. I rarely find a wine green in a way that it would be underripe for me, though apparently for some people any touch of greenness becomes underripe for their subjective tastes - in fact I find myself using green as a positive descriptor, though that goes against the generally accepted conventions of wine jargon.

I have found some delightfully savoury and refreshing aromas in most '04s; and I have to accept that some may find them underripe though I don't. But I wonder if the same is happening to '04s as happened to the Bojos of that vintage: I think the Bojos started out rather tart and not in great balance, but came together after a year or so in bottle. I wonder if anyone who has noticed unpleasant greenness earlier on in a wine is willing to experiment again to see if it has calmed down meanwhile and become more to their tastes?

I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

For the most part I am right with you Otto. The sarcastic introduction to my note was mostly for the benefit of the eBob thread where I cross-posted. I enjoy a green (e.g. herbs, grass, mint, tobacco) in many wines as long as it doesn't cross into a dominating streak of green pepper (though a little green pepper is ok). You are likely even more tolerant of it than I am, but we're definitely in the minority in the world of wine.

Thanks for notes. Will open an '04 Bachelet soon to see.
I also think that some of the perception/acceptance of "greenness" is genetic.

We'll have to compare notes later: I have a 2004 mid-level (forgot the commune here at work) Bachelet to try sometime. So far, I've liked the several 2004 red Burgundies I've tried: very sappy and food friendly vintage, and yes, I don't mind herbs on my plate.
