WTN: New (to me) appellation - Jasnieres

by John Tomasso » Wed May 07, 2008 8:48 am

Our tasting group got together last night and opened a few bottles.
I've raked over my memory pretty well, but cannot recall ever having had a wine from this Loire appellation before.
2004 Domaine de la Charriere - Cuvee du Paradis - Jasnieres

It's pale yellow in the glass, and there's a somewhat odd note on the nose, something I can't quite place.
It's very minerally, but something's in there, maybe stewed tomato? Nope.
The wine's acidity literally makes my mouth water - intense grapefruity and lemon flavors dominate, and it has a sustained finish.
I jot down a few notes and move on to the next wine.

Later, when we revisit the wine, with food, I take a whiff, and blurt out, "Canned peas!" And that was the aroma I was struggling to recall. Unmistakeable.

In the end, I found the wine pretty interesting, and it paired well with a homemade goat cheese and scallop spread, but I neither loved nor hated it.
I had to mark it down for the canned peas, as I am not a big fan of canned vegie aromas in my wine.

I would drink it again. I'd love to try it with raw oysters.

What an interesting wine--I hate canned peas, but it's always fascinating to find such offbeat and yet "unmistakable" flavors in wine. You didn't mention which grape(s)--sauv blanc?

Curnonsky, the king of early 20th century gourmets, once said "three or four times in a century Jasnières is the finest white wine in the world". Its northerly location in the valley of le Loir (note not la Loire here) meant poor ripening of Chenin in all but the best years but when nature smiled the results were stupendous. Thankfully the combination of global warming and better husbandry means that the wine from this region have become much more consistent.

Look out for the wines of Eric Nicolas from Domaine de Bellivière. His Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir wines are wonderfully focused and mineral. I have posted some WTNs about these.

Incidentally Bellivière's 2004s also have an odd but not displeasing aroma which I liken to charcoal.
