WTN: Wines with Thai food

by Jay Labrador » Sun May 04, 2008 12:47 pm

After several trips to Thailand to study Thai cooking, Chef Gene invited us to Cafe Ysabel where he prepared a Thai dinner to show off what he learned.

Herman J. Wiemer Dry Riesling 2006 - From Finger Lakes, New York. Rather rich texture. Not much of a nose. Lots of acid. Pineapple. Not bad. Somewhat like a Spatlese Trocken.

Konstantin Frank Gewurztraminer 2006 - Light and dryish. Unexciting wine but oddly enough, stood up to, and matched rather nicely with, a very spicy tom yum soup with roasted peppers.

Villa Maria Gewurztraminer 2005 - Dark gold. Looks like dessert wine. Lychee, tea leaf finish. Strong enough to stand up to some very spicy salads.

Rosenblum Abba Vineyard Syrah 2005 - Nearly black. Very rich. Coarse tannins. There is a very slight herbal edge on the finish which was quite unexpected. Fruit syrup. A massive wine which is approachable now.

Les Planes de Vilarnau Pinot Noir Rose 2006 - Very dark rose. Very light. Nice, sour strawberry, quaffer.

We also had 2 beers from Unibroue: One was very good but I can't recall the name even though I brought it, and an outstanding, very fragrant and smooth, Le Fin du Monde which, so far, is the best beer I've tried from Unibroue.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Does Unibroue export its wine to the Philippines or did someone bring them? I agree with you on the Le Fin du Monde.

Same question on the Finger Lakes rieslings, are those exported to the Philippines?

The beer is imported in small quantities by a friend of ours. I don't think he's an official Unibroue agent, just buys a few cases and brings them in.

The Finger Lakes wines were brought by a friend of ours who just got back from a trip to the US where he spent a few days around the Finger Lakes area. As far as I know, no Finger Lakes wines are imported here.
