Interesting wine Distributor and Rose wines

by Josh » Sat May 03, 2008 12:41 pm

I wanted to load up my fridge so i had one of the local distributors send over around 4 case of different stuff including 6 bottles of random whites...and a Rose. The distributor is a niche distributor with lots of Southern france, Spanish and other interesting regions and varietals. i will post some of the hilites later.

anyway the Rose he sent over was http://www.cabriniwines.com/sku21349.html Domaine La Suffrene Bandol Rose 750ML 2006.

I think last time I had a rose i didn't like it. The distributor guy says rose is a good breakfast wine (i.e Brunch)

So my question is do you guys like Rose wines and when do you drink them and with what do you pair them?

I will post a couple of the other interesting things he sent over later.

Rose is a great hot weather sipper. I love to drink it in the evening on the patio, well chilled after a hot day of working in the yard.

Never been a fan of roses. If I want water, I'll drink it straight.

(limiting comments to still dry pinks)

Food matches that I've liked with rosés include paella, pork (especially ham), bouillabaisse, ratatouille, chicken salad, sausages.

Rosés come in a pretty wide variety of styles. I'm a fan, but that doesn't mean I like every rosé.

There are the very light ones, which are great quite cold as an apertif or picnic wine. Chivite's rosado is usually a good example.

Then there are lighter wines like some Pineau d'Aunis rosés. Crisp, bright, very food friendly.

Then there are the midweights. I like the Il Mimo rosato, some Marsannays, etc.

A bit heavier you might fine most Tavels and Bandols. And the wondrous Edmunds St Jean Bone Jolly. Good matches on the patio with chicken, lighter grilled meats.

The most "serious" rose I know is the the Lopez de Heredia Tondonia, along with maybe Tempier and the Cotats.

Most rose is crap. But you could say the same about whites and reds, too.

I agree with everything you said Dale, except that Edmunds St Jean thing.:-) I ordered a case of the 2007 Bone Jolly rosé, and when it gets to the Ohio Valley I will likely get another 6 or so. IMO those who do not line rosé haven't had a good one. I can't even imagine not liking a rosé with a picnic basket of fried chicken!

I couldn't imagine going through summer without Roses. Last summer, we went through 3 cases of roses on the boat and another couple on the patio. Our anchor rose last year was Benessere Rosado (Sangiovese) out of Napa. I would almost say full bodied, but either way, great fruit.

When it comes to food, typical summer foods match well. Cold apps and salads to all different types of bbq fun. How can you not like a good rose?

Taste as many as you can. And enjoy.....

As a side note, what better wine is there to get someone interested in wine, than a good rose?
