WTN: Schlossgut Diel 'Rosé de Diel' 2006

by Bill Hooper » Sat Apr 26, 2008 10:23 pm

Pinot Noir Weißherbst -This is a beautiful coral hued rosé; sharing the similar pale color of the great Bandol and vin gris wines of Provence. Even the Pinot Noir rosé from Burgundy and the Loire (not to mention many from Germany) have more color extraction. Strawberry and cherry fruit, a little banana, marzipan, rose-petal and white pepper. It is powerfully flavored, but still refreshing and tangy. I love the acidity and focus. 12% alc. $21

Sounds good.

Would it be worth the $30something price Nathan uncovered?

Rahsaan,

I wouldn't buy a case of it, but I'd probably fork over $30 for a bottle. I find Rosé to be a difficult beast to throw a price tag on. The Tempier Bandol or Clair Marsannay Rosé makes a hell of a lot of sense for 10-12€ while sitting at a café in AeP or Beaune while soaking up a sunny day, while the export cost (and loss of locality) makes the same wine seem expensive over here –this is after all, supposed to be a simple quaff. The fact that there are dozens of imported pinks selling for over $20 vintage in and out says to me that there is enough demand for them to keep it profitable for importers. For my part, I’ll continue to buy them; I dislike American Rosé.

Bill - you dislike all USA Rosé, even the ESJ? I have had the Diel a few times (not the '06), and consider the ESJ a much better buy, even when the Diel is priced appropriately (low $20s).

David, I like to dabble in broad generalizations! I haven't tasted the ESJ in over a year (it isn't distributed in MN) but I'm sure there are other producers too that make solid stuff. I can't think of many though.
