Dinner last night with Beth Sheligo. We ate Thai, so we drank German.
2005 St. Urbans-Hof Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Auslese (Mosel)
Wow. Heavenly nose of peaches, bright honey, citrus and clear streamwater. Clearly of the genre auslese, and delicious with the food, it had density of texture and flavor but only moderate palate weight, making it both food friendly and refreshing. This is fantastic auslese.
Prior to that we had...
2005 Schafer-Frohlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spatlese (Nahe)
Initially this was quite open and delicious, slatey and fruity wit plenty of acid for its copious fruit. After a while something changed & the sulfur came out and totally dominated the wine. I've never had sulfur emerge that way after airing. Very strange showing. I'll leave my other bottles to fan the flames of hell until they calm down. Weird.
