Not sure what was wrong with these two bottles, but something definitely was . . . both undrinkable.
2005 Blenheim Virginia Viognier (Virginia, USA) cork closure, 13.8% - appears medium straw gold, smell pineapple, mango, banana, bit of cheese, mouthfeel thick and heavy, taste heavy lumbering thick fruit, tropical, feels both overripe/rotting and spicy, undrinkable gloppy mess, either beyond its prime or, I suspect, an off-bottle, alas for $23. From producer: 80 percent King Family Viognier, 20 percent Mount Juliet Vigonier
2003 Marc Kreydenweiss Alsace Riesling Clos Rebberg Aux Vignes (Andlau, Alsace AOC, France) cork closure, 12.5% - appears gold with silver rim, smell quite stony and a bit musty, mouthfeel has great textured flow, taste muted fresh fruit, blueberry, bit of spice, finish is bizarre, though I like it somewhat, tastes like eating bag of cement. My companion thought this corked--I am not sensitive/super familiar with the signs of TCA--but there was no doubt there was something wrong with this bottle, had great textured fruit buried within but the dominant impression was dragging one’s tongue across a stone cellar floor, undrinkable (though I must say I enjoyed spitting it--kind of a stony mouthwash) too bad for 20 euro.
