WTN: Macon and Cote d'Or 375s, plus nebbiolo rose

by Dale Williams » Wed Apr 23, 2008 2:30 pm

Sunday I watched an amusing performance of Bernstein's "Candide" and a tribute to Harold Prince, then wasted time walking around Upper West Side while Betsy was at season-end event (I went into 67th St Wines, which still has best half-bottle selection in city, but since most 375s were 90% of price of another store's 750 I passed). Once Betsy was free we went to for dinner in the city at La Boite en Bois. Only wanted a half bottle, so went for the 2006 Jadot Macon-Villages. Riper than most years, but still good acidity. Lemon and apple fruit, no apparent oak, unexciting but certainly servicable. Ok with my garlic sausage with lentils followed by liver with pearl onions and bacon. B-

Been gorgeous weather last few days, enjoyed dinner on the patio. One night was tandoori-style (though on grill) chicken, with a curried spinach/eggplant combo. 2006 Cantalupo "Il Mimo" Rosato. This Nebbiolo rose is a bigger style, big cherry and strawberry fruit, juicy, tasty. A nice spicy edge, did well with a difficult pairing. Last year's model is holding well , but this is my last and I look forward to the 2007. B

Last night was herbed pork chops, sauteed mushrooms, and asparagus. I opened a 375 of the 2001 Nicolas Potel Chambolle-Musigny. A bit bigger and riper than I remembered, more kirschy flavors than fresh cherry. Earth and damp leaves. B+/B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

You probably remember that I'm a big fan of the Il Mimo too. Still some 06 here on the shelves and no 07s yet. I'm waiting!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
