Made by a small Napa producer in obscure Gordon Valley (located immediately east of Mount George and south of Highway 121), Eagle Eye brought their wines to the local WineStyles last night. Didn't care all that much for their reds-I honestly think Zinfandel dominates any blend even at tiny percentages and the Cab lacked the "Rutherford Dust" the label promised, but....They had two fantastic savory white blends that made me break into Italian-or Italian-inflected German. Definitely the kind of minerally-savory, almost salty character I associate with Alto Adige or Friuli! Great acidity, too.
The one I ended up liking the most was a "Sauvignon Blanc" that was actually only 79% SB with a whallop of steely, lean, crisp Pinot Grigio and a smidgeon of, believe it or not Roussane. I am not familiar at all with this grape, but I thought it added just a hint of delicious fruity tropical peaches and melon to the steely, savory underlying character of this SB blend. No real grassyness, but there is definitely some lime and grapefruit going on, with that outstanding savory character mentioned above. Under $20 for a signed bottle-a real find.
The Pinot Grigio blend was also delicious, but I liked that hint of tropicality in the Sauvignon Blanc blend just a tad bit better. They also had a Muscat Canelli that was decent.
