An English Gentleman's Cellar!

by David Lole » Tue Apr 22, 2008 11:41 pm

Never in all my days have I seen a collection of wine like this ... and all from the one person ... and probably the best wine cataloguing I've come across to boot!

impressive but I had a good laugh at the german section:

- kallsladler kobnert in the mosel - too funny. it's probably a von buhl kallstadter kobnert bottled by a mosel negociant.
- they praise every vintage except what is hailed among amateurs as the best vintage of the 20th century: the 1911 ...

ah well, you can't everything but a call to any friendly buyer would have helped - probably even asking the seller himself. strange ...

Thanks for that information, Fish-person. I'll keep an eye out for the 1911's!

Impressive indeed. I even put in a bid for one lot of Sauternes. :D

I got a kick out of the Constantia labeled "Constantia 1791 or 1809".

Anyone want to go in on the Tokaji Essencia from 1868? Only $1500.

It makes me laugh to think of what they'd say if they tried to auction off my cellar.

Zachys Wine Auctions has the pleasure of announcing the forthcoming auction of a small, eclectic Pacific Northwest collection, that of Jenise. Over 2,000 bottles of some of the world's weirdest wines and the occasional good bottle of Bordeaux will be auctioned off at the La Playa Taco Truck on the corner of Meridien and Bakerview at noon on May 5, 2008.

The list oddities is endless.

Although Ms. Jenise is a loud and crazy housewife, her collection of wine indicates otherwise. Fascinated by first one thing and then another, she began collecting in the 90's and then trucked her wines up and down the Left Coast. Those that didn't freeze on the tundra or bake in El Lay have been stored carefully in her cool garage cellar where they've been further protected by a fine layer of cat hair, an excellent insulation material.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Really an impressive cellar. Too bad if some German/Russian wines had some iffy cataloging, but with damp labels etc I'm guessing on some they went with descriptions of wines from earlier (acquiring) auctions. David W. is a great guy, with extraordinary palate and knowledge, but he's more a "classicist" (Burg and Bdx). Plus handwritten notes and Germanic script are a recipe for occasional mistake. And I think they only gave vintage notes where they had multiple lots for the vintage.

Wonder how it went, should be numbers coming out soon

What would a 130 year old wine taste like?
