WTN: Four Cru Bourgeois 2000, Pavie Rose, Pride Viognier

Notes from lunch with Arnie, Helen, Bernie, Jojo and Johnny. Three reds and the Rose were from Jojo, one red was from Bernie and the dessert was from Arnie. The reds were served blind and ranked. For starters, we had:

Rose de Pavie 2005 - About as close as I'll ever get to Pavie 2005 unless it gets included in the tastings at Vinexpo next month. Deep, glowing, hot pink. Quite rich. Very flavorful. Texture like light red wine. Very good.

#1 A little hot on the nose. High alcohol. Just a bit earthy. Quite dry with lots of acidity. Dried herbs. Soy sauce. Very tannic. Good body. Unbalanced. My #3. Group #4. Chateau Siran 2000. What a shocker! Last time I had this nearly two years ago I thought it was excellent. Not showing too well today.

#2 Very earthy. Weighty. Remarkably long. Leafy flavors. Not too interesting by itself but excellent with the burgers, making it quite sweet. My #2. Group #1. Rollan de By 2000 brought by Bernie.

#3 Closed on nose. Sweet, berryish. Ripe fuit. Good perfume. Coarse tannins. Again, excellent with the food and much smoother and better integrated after nearly two hours in the glass. My #1. Group #2. Labegorce Zede 2000.

#4 Very dark. Ripe fruit. Surprisingly light and smooth. Drinking very well. Showing lots of fruit. Unfortunately, it didn't have the stuffing to compete with the food. My #4. Group #3. Sociando Mallet 2000. Another shocker! We expected this to do better than the less famous names like Rollan de By and Labegorce Zede.

Although Jojo originally volunteered to being dessert, he couldn't locate the bottle he intended to bring so Arnie volunteered to bring a bottle:

Pride Mistelle de Viognier NV(?)- There doesn't seem to be a vintage on the label. Finished with a rather cheap-looking plastic screw-cap. Light lemon color. Remarkable nose like almond extract and Chinese black seaweed gelatin. Not sure if the US and European readers know what that is but I'm sure Filipino readers will know exactly what I mean. Very high acidity to balance the sweetness. Tastes like lemon custard. Powerful enough to match the creme caramel and bread pudding. Excellent and very interesting.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
