Rias Baixas '07 harvest down 39%

by Dave Erickson » Mon Apr 21, 2008 7:52 am

Rias Baixas production was down 39% in the 2007 vintage, according to an article in Decanter. http://www.decanter.com/specials/169805.html#spain.

According to my sources, Martin Codax (with financial backing from Gallo) is the single biggest owner of vines in the region, and there is a fair chance that smaller producers have been basically shut out of the vintage. Anyone with any further information?

Hi Dave. It does not function in Spain as in USA, so smaller producers will not be more harder hit.

In most of Europe smaller producers do not buy grapes but grow their own, so also in Galicia.
In contrary it can be the bigger ones that will have problem as they usually buy more.
Most grower that sells to bigger ones also makes their own wine and they can sometimes give priority to their own wines.
