WTN: Domaine R. Chevillon N-S-G "Les Perrieres" 2000

by David Lole » Mon Apr 21, 2008 7:06 am

Stray bottle I picked up for a reasonable price (compared to what I'd pay for a 2005+) in a temperature-controlled wine shop*.

Mature hue, mostly rusty browns, a little amber with a light ruby core. Attractive multilayered bouquet of pinot sap, sweet earth, undergrowth, plum, black cherry over a solid base of savoury oak. Quite masculine and with enormous depth. The palate marches to the beat of the same drum - solid, well-endowed, plenty of earthy, sappy, plummy fruit with resolute support from a firm, but integrated, tannin regime and lively acidity. Finishing with excellent persistence, this very impressive wine has the potential for another 5-10 years of superior drinking. 90 points

* = I'm continually dismayed at the number of wine stores in Australia with little or no concern at the temperatures they store thousands upon thousands of dollars of wine that requires careful storage in order to be sold in a fit and proper condition.
Cheers,

David

Very nice note David.

I have enjoyed several of hte 2000 Chevillons, with the Cailles and Vaucrains being the standouts for me. THey are drinking well now, but still have the potential to improve for some time to come (thought my bottles won't make it as they are being sacrificed to keep my hands off the 2001-2005s).

Thanks for excellent note. The only remaining '00 Chevillons I have are the Roncieres and the Chaignots, "lesser" 1ers that are drinking well now but no danger of falling off a cliff.

24 hour update .......

Some minor degradation on the nose, the earthy/undergrowth notes now have a touch of mushroom and there's a hint of duck pond as a top note. Otherwise, extremely good on the palate, holding up very well indeed.

David,

Have you tried their "Les St. Georges"? With the Vaucrains, I rate these two the best of a terrific portfolio, followed closely by the Cailles, then the Perrieres, Roncieres ... and then the others (and all of them darn good -> excellent+ ... and I regard this Domaine to be one of the finest and, just as importantly for a Burgundy producer, one of the the most consistent on the entire Cote)
Cheers,

I have not had the 2000 Les Saint Georges. In fact the only time I have ever had wine from that site it was the 2003 (ghastly stuff - it was served blind & mistaken by the group for a ripe vintage California Pinot).

I didn't buy mch '03 Burgundy, but a few Chevillons got added to a PC order on theory "producer, producer, producer." I think ghastly is appropriate word for the Perrieres, the Pruliers was maybe a tad better. I gave most away to folks who like ripe/candied, held onto one Pruliers. We'll see if time can help.

I clean forgot all about 2003! If there is one vintage I will never even consider looking at - this would be it! So even the Chevillons couldn't handle the heat!

IMO Chevillon is in the lower 30 percentile, they did even worse than average. Not a vintage I bought from anyone, but I have had some very nice wines from Lafarge, de Courcel, Mugnier, etc (though all of course riper than normal).

Indeed an unusual swing and miss for Chevillon in 2003. I wonder if Nuits in general was worse.

Anyway I've had a few good 2003s (Bocquenet, Mugneret-Gibourg), but not many.
