WTN: No. 99 Unoaked Chardonnay 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Apr 19, 2008 9:54 pm

Wayne Gretzky Estates.
Niagara Peninsula.

Clean, spicy nose with honey and peach.

Quite rich, honeyed, lemon, apple, grapefruit, peach and tangerine, silky in the mouth, tangy and zesty acidity, citrus rind bitterness, peppery and a very odd pine resin note as the wine warmed.

A very tangy finish, peppery, with lemon.

I had heard this winery was doing good things and now I have discovered for myself. A very rich, fruity wine, with enough zippy acidity and ctirus rind bite to keep it fresh and clean. Delicious.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian) and a very good deal for the price.

Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Local wine bar and store next door is featuring sport celeb wines...Weir, Els, #99, and so on. Prices are scary for some of this stuff?

I think some of Gretzky's reds are closer to $20 as is the case with Mike Weir's, but I found the No. 99 Chardonnay to be exceptionally well priced for what I got.
