$31 for a Rosé from the Nahe ?!?

by Nathan Smyth » Sat Apr 19, 2008 1:59 pm

2006 Schlossgut Diel Pinot Noir Rosé Nahe

Okay, technically speaking, it was $30.99, but with 6.75% sales tax, it would have rung up at the cash register as $33.08.

Anyway, I was browsing through a wine store last night, and this bottle caught my eye - the wine inside it is certainly a very pretty color - but the price was flabbergasting.

I came home and looked it up on Cellar-Tracker, where no one seems to be particularly enthusiastic about it:

cellartracker.com, diel rose nahe

BTW, I googled a little, and discovered that it's available in England for about $20.66:

vivinum.co.uk, 10.34£

finance.yahoo.com, 10.34£ = $20.66

I'd love to try the wine, just to see what a Pinot Noir Rosé from the Nahe might taste like, but I'm having a real difficult time wrapping my head around the idea of ponying up more than $33 for the honor of doing so.

Which leaves me wondering - are people so wealthy these days that they have money to burn on capricious purchases like this?

Just a few years ago, I could still get JJ Prüm Spätlesen & Auslesen in the high $20's [in "vintages of the century", no less].

Oh well, I guess I just don't understand this hobby anymore.

Why?

You'd have to pay a lot more than $31 for most of the non-rose pinot noirs from Germany that get imported to the US. And most of them aren't very exciting.

Just curiosity.

But wow, I certainly don't have $30+ worth of curiosity.

On a lark, I MIGHT try the wine at the UK price of $20, but I'd consider even $20 to be at the very far upper bound of where I'd allow curiosity to lead me.

Besides, I guess maybe I'm spoiled because I'm so accustomed to merchants pouring wine for free that the idea of paying [through the nose] to learn about wine is getting to be kinda foreign to me.

Lucky you.

Depending on what wines you are interested in, I don't think its reasonable to expect to cover every wine region of interest with useful in-store tastings. But, if you can, more power to you!

David,
I agree that a producer should price his wares at whatever price he has to, to make the profit he has to have. However, having said that, I will often admit to groaning and even occasionally grunting when I see the sticker. It won't do me any good to complain here about price, but I don't see any reason to make the observation you made. I think Nathan has as much right to complain about a price he thinks is off on the way high side, as any of us do to brag about the bargain we found. Just MO.

He can complain & I can say I've seen it before (and I have...a lot). Nathan's favorite wine is free wine.

David, This forum is about wine. I think you are out of line with your comments about people, who post legitimate feedback. I would like to see a lot less personal sniping here. -- Clark

If Nathan posts some notes rather than just complaints I will happily read & comment on them.

Nathan,

I bought a bottle today for $21 (where do you shop?) I might open it this weekend and post a TN.
