Ah, For The Good Old Days...

by Tom V » Mon Apr 14, 2008 2:40 pm

I was puttering around in a distant corner of my wine cellar and came across a bottle of 1982 Chateau Le Gay. The orange price sticker was still on it, $3.99! I wonder what that would translate into in today's dollars, simply adjusted for inflation? Too bad it's one of only 2 '82 Bordeaux in my cellar. Tom

As in Pomerol? Might be pretty nice wine...
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Hmm...I was depressed this weekend about a bottle of '94 Vieux Telegraphe that had a $26.99 sticker. Yours is positively sickening.

Yep, the Pomerol, and yep again, made my kinda sick too! ...will be fun to pop it though, I'll probably "Weber Roast" a big prime rib sometime in May or June and invite some wine loving friends. Tom

My goodness! ...sort of like not having bought that '70 Cuda and put it up on blocks! Just saw my $3.99 bottle offered on "Vinfolio" for $175. I guess I'm gonna have to make a lamp out of the bottle after I drink it, with the sticker on it of course! Well it should taste good anyway, here's the write up that appears along with the offering:

International Wine Cellar (1)

July/August 2002
Saturated full red. Aromas of candied red berries, mushroom, dark chocolate, minerals and menthol. Dense and rich but chunky; boasts very good vinosity and considerable power. Slightly rustic leather and earth notes. Finishes with strong, chalky tannins and excellent persistence. Long on personality. Drink now through 2010.

Adjusted for inflation, probably $39.90. Or 10 times.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Well Paul, I purchased this wine shortly after it appeared on retail shelves. An equivalent purchase today, of a similarly highly rated vintage, would be the purchase of a 2005 Le Gay. Zachys has the 750ml Le Gay for $200., the Chicago Wine Company has it at $119.50. Still lots of room for nostalgia! Tom

Perhaps I am so jealous that it is making me sick. I never got to buy good wine cheap (except for German Riesling).
