Had a day off (flex Friday) so I did another short ride in Napa.
Stopped at Heitz again-they were pouring some nice wines. The 2005 Petit Verdot is juicy and fruity, yet savory and earthy at the same time. Not cheap ($35) but worth it. Also enjoyed more this time the 1998 Bella Oaks. Rather than worrying about the mint/bell pepper, I simply recognized they are simply part of the package. Definitely oak here, but Heitz oak program is not obnoxious, it just helps create a smooth, lush mouth feel that I really enjoy. Less acidity than the 1998 Trailside, and less black fruit. More raspberry/red fruit side of the spectrum. I enjoyed this wine this time.
Sequoia Grove-the 2004 Stagecoach Syrah is still showing very well. Savory, earthy, good blackberry fruit, and $20. Can't lose!
William Harrison-tried two years of Estate Cabernet Franc, which is imo their best wine. The 2004 has beautiful smooth black and red fruit. No herbal notes, really, but the oak is well integrated and quite lovely. The 2005 fruit was not quite as prominent. May be a little young. Just a hint of herbaciousness, and the wine seems "brighter" than the 2004. Both Cab Francs were quite nice. Not sure I could pick a single favorite.
