We all know that trying cheap closeout wines can be hit or miss. Today's example was a hit (a double at least). Purchased last week at the west coast of the USA chain Grocery Outlet was a 1999 Gabrielli (Goforth Vineyard) Redwood Valley (northern Mendocino County, CA) Zinfandel. Purchase price was $3.99. The wine changed dramatically over the day it was opened. The first night it was a good if angular mountain zin with nice aromas of cherry and brambleberry, a touch of va, and some chewy tannin at the end of a solid core of fruit. I enjoyed the wine at dinner. The second night the wine had opened up considerably after sitting on the counter overnight. It was richer, showing its touch of oak under the fruit, with more fully resolved tannin. Quite good as a matter of fact (or at least opinion.) If you see it at the store it is worth buying. I really have to go visit Redwood Valley one of these days. There are some good zins being grown there. All the best, Jim
