WTN: A Couple of 2004s - Arcadian & Robert Arnoux

by Jason Hagen » Wed Apr 09, 2008 12:55 pm

I decided to try a couple of 04s from areas that say very different growing extremes. I think this shows that good wine-makers can overcome.

2004 Arcadian Pinot Noir Gold Coast - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley (3/31/2008)
I really like this. A great value. I really enjoy the aromatics on the SMV wines. Bursting with fruit and a small touch of earth. There is also a spicy note that seems to be from stems. The palate is very smooth but not soft. Very easy to drink on its own but works perfectly with food. I wouldn't call it discreet with the food, rather a nice addition. A nice level of ripeness especially considering the vintage. Ready to go but seems like it will hold up fine for many years. (89 pts.)

2004 Domaine Robert Arnoux Nuits St. Georges - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges (3/31/2008)
The nose on this wine is not hiding. It is showing its green self right up front. Be selective if you try or buy this wine. I liked it and think it will improve but it is a bit green and the acids will definitely cleans your mouth. This is not for the acid adverse. I would have liked a bit more ripeness and richness but there is not a lot of that in 2004. Fairly straight forward and not a bad value. (88 pts.)

Cheers,
Jason

Jason,
I've also posted in the Wine-Related Travel Forum, but I am tentatively planning to visit Santa Barbara County wineries in October 2008. Can you suggest some favorites or "not-to-miss" wineries that either have public tasting rooms or will take appointments for tasting?
