WTN: Cathedral Cellar Shiraz 2003

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Apr 08, 2008 6:50 pm

KWV
WO Coastal Region.

Moderate cherry red in the glass.

Smoky, earthy nose.

Quite tangy and peppery, cherry, raspberry and cranberry, earthy, leather, slightly charred.

Quite drying on the initial finish, but then the raspberry-cherry fruit kicked in for a fairly long finish.

An okay wine, but, IMHO, not worth the price. Purchased at $16.95 (Canadian).

Thanks for the note Bruce. I was eyeing this wine at Vintages just recently but opted to get the Lammershoek Pinotage, which was alright but not my kind of Pinotage at all - too blowsy, sweet and searingly alcoholic.

The direction that some of these wines are taking has nothing in common with the stern elegance of the many South African offerings that could easily be bought on LCBO regular list right through the late 1990s.

That said, I should note that in most cases I have been duly impressed with the quality and value offered by KWV. For example, I do enjoy the Cathedral Cellar Cab Sauvignon quite a bit.
