WTN: 2002 & 2003 Arcadian Dierberg Pinot Noir

2002 Arcadian Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley (3/29/2008)
Popped last minute when friends requested pinot. I through it in the decanter as I know last time I had this it improved with air. Still too young but awesome. No real notes. I'll just say it is less aggressive than the 03. Everyone at the table could not stop talking about it. Fantastic aromatics and palate.

Interesting color. Looks like it had more age on it. I have had this 3 times now. I just looked at my note that said wait to try again. Oh well. A great wine. Big tart fruit. Citrus and light cherries. Red fruited. The attack and mid palate are ready to go but the finish is tight and slightly bitter. This wine is not a fragile flower which sometime people try to make Joe's wines out as. That is not to say it is heavy or devoid of non fruit elements. Now I will make sure to wait on my next bottle. I'd say 2011 would be a good time to revisit. (93 pts.)

They were pouring the Arcadian Dierberg at Tastes of the Valley wine bar in Solvang (a very good place to visit after 5 pm or so.. http://tastesofthevalleys.com) last weekend. It is a bigger wine than some other Arcadian Pinots, but I think that is a characteristic of the Dierberg vineyard that is out there near Santa Maria...and looks like it doesn't get much fog to cool off during the evening...

I know the Dierberg Dierberg (Dierberg now has a tasting room open on the 246 right before Foley Estates) is a big boy.. but, like the Arcadian, with balance .. not elegance, not pretty, big and balanced.. like a heavy guy who dances lightly on his feet..
Cheers, Jim

That is my thought too. But I like this kind of big. Not bothered by it at all and in fact I often crave it.
