Online, wine retailers in the US, S France,Rhones,Bandols

by BMcKenney » Sat Mar 29, 2008 9:25 pm

I'm going to the US next week and I know prices are better there for some wine compared to Canada. The location I'm going to, Arkansas, has very limited wine retailers. So I'm looking to order from an online retailer and have my order shipped to my hotel. What are the top online retailers in the US that are good at shipping anywhere? And I want to deal with a retailer that has a lot of Kermit Lynch imports, such as Tempier.

Thanks

Well, I would guess Kermit's shop in Bay Area would have best selection of his imports. Though I think it's not generally a price leader- maybe someone else know better.

Chambers Street in NYC has some KL wines, and has great customer service. Probably the most popular store on this site (and with me)- great selection of "geeky" stuff.

Other stores that have wide selections and good reps in general might include
NY: Astor in NYC, Zachys in Scarsdale NY (often high regular prices, but often good on sale), PJs in NYC. Grapes the Wine Company in White Plains (formerly Rye, not to be confused with the horrible Grapes in Connecticut) is very good, though maybe oriented more along the Bordeaux/Burgundy/Spain end of things than KL style wines (though he does offer a lot of good Southern Rhones ).

CA: Wine Exchange in Orange, Woodland Hills in LA, K&L in SF. Premier Cru in Emeryville is often a price leader, but lots of stuff is prearrival.

NJ: Winelibrary

I've never shopped there, but lots of people like Brown Derby in I think St Louis, closest to Arkansas.

Another option if you're looking for specific wines is just to check Winesearcher.com, see who has, and search for comments here on store, or post to see if people have experience.

Good luck!

Bad news, Bryan. Arkansas - probably for some of the same reasons as why it has lousy retail - is one of the states that forbids direct mail-order or Internet sales to residents. I'm afraid you will find relatively few vendors willing to ship to an address there.

Robin, I just spoke with someone at winex and they say their shippers (fedex etc) will go in to AR. Are you sure about this?

Bryan, I checked the Interstate Shipping pages at http://www.wine-institute.org , and they list Arkansas as a no-shipping state. But this is a fast-changing landscape, and so things could have changed. Moreover, SOME shippers are more willing than others to push the limits, and I say good for them. Bottom line, if you can find vendors who'll ship, go for it! But AR is not listed as one of the more shipping-friendly states, so I think you may find variable responses.
