I was making a dinner combining 2 variations of potatoes au gratin (leftovers) with diced Nieman Ranch ham. I had been thinking Pinot Noir, but then remembered I had this white in the cellar. I thought it would make a good match and it did.
2005 Enotria Arneis Flowers and spice nose. Apples, honey, and tropical fruits mixed with stones, a creamy mouthfeel and a brisk acidity to keep it lively. Great lingering finish of green apples and honey. Despite the honey notes, this wine is finished dry (.6% RS). $16 from the Graziano family.
I first encountered this wine at a tasting of Graziano wines and it was my clear favorite. I'll report on the others I bought as I drink them (Barbera, Sangiovese and a Zin).
The two potato variations - one was with brie and a topping of grated extra sharp white Vermont Cheddar, the other was the same white Cheddar and Chiipotle peppers that I made for a potluck at work. Both had onions in them and combined with the ham made a tasty dish.
