WTN: Peter Lehmann

Notes from last night's Peter Lehmann wine dinner Tosca, Dusit Hotel.

Peter Lehmann Chardonnay 2005 - Very gentle, well-judged use of oak. Good orange fruit with some acidity to keep it refreshing. I was expecting a woody, over the top wine but this was very good.

Peter Lehmann Eden Valley Riesling 2006 - Lots of gasoline on the nose. Lemony, crisp. Refreshing. I don't generally like Oz Riesling but I can drink this. Unfortunately, ruined by pairing with scallop in a way too sweet honey sauce which totally killed the wine.

Peter Lehmann Shiraz/Grenache 2006 - Medium-bodied. Red berries on the nose. Slightly minty and meaty. Soft, easy wine for current drinking. Simple, juicy, no oak. Kinda boring for me.

Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz 2004 - Extremely dark. Beautiful nose with obvious oak influence offering up coconut and vanilla. The oak is, however, subdued on the palate. Generally soft after double decanting although there are some coarse tannins in the finish. Well-balanced. Not at all jammy. Very good.

Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 2002 - Nose similar to the Futures but slightly more subdued. On the palate, spices, sweet, ripe fruit and espresso. Seamless and well-integrated. Finishes with very fine, powdery, tannins. Ready for drinking. Excellent, classy wine.

I was pleasantly surprised by these wines. I associate Barossa with rich, ultra ripe, sweet, jammy, oaky wines but these were very well made and not tiring to drink.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

I agree. Lehmann is a huge producer, but despite the quantities, the quality is pretty consistent, even (particularly?) in the low end wines. The reserve riesling is much better than the regular riesling! Their Black Queen (sparkling shiraz) is a good, under the radar example of this type of wine.
