Pass on 2005 Faiveley Mercurey Les Mauvarennes

by Peter M Czyryca » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:10 pm

I bought one as a test split after really enjoying the 2005 Faiveley Clos des Myglands.

The nose was promising, some earth notes, sour cherry and a citrus rind component - but this is a mess. There isn't much oak on the nose, but wow does it show on the palate. Very hollow midpalate to boot.

Figured I'd make a public service announcement on this one so you can avoid the $11 mistake I just made 8) . I really don't see it rounding into form, the fruit is too thin to support the wood/tannin blast.

And where were you two weeks ago when I bought a bottle of the 2005 Faiveley MLM, Peter?! :) Perhaps I will try to return it on general principles. If I ever meet the guy who invented Burgundy I'm going to punch him right in the nose.

My bad Sam!

Ironically that's around the same time I bought my bottle.

It's a shame, too - b/c the Mylands was outstanding, and the nose on the MLM was nice enough. Post here when you open yours.

The guy who invented burgundy was a cistercian monk, so a punch in the nose would be most sacrilegious.

The 04 Myglands is also good, and much more accessible at this point than the 05.

In that case I will pinch his cheek and speak to him in an angry tone!
