Planned visit to Santa Barbara County in October

by JC (NC) » Fri Mar 21, 2008 1:15 pm

Looking for suggestions on lodging, wineries to visit, restaurants in Santa Barbara County. I will probably have about four days to sightsee and visit wineries. The rest of the time will be travel getting there and getting home.

On our very brief visit through the county last month we visited Babcock by appointment - had a great vineyard tour with Bryan Babcock and then a decent little tasting with the tasting room guy. Beautiful place, but then it all is beautiful out there.

Afterwards had lunch at the Los Olivos Café as featured in Sideways but definitely NOT why we chose it - several people had recommended it. The very quiet little town (or at least it was on a Monday in February) seemed in a time warp and the restaurant was an excellent lunch stop - they have a massive wine list too - it would be good for dinner too. My partner swore he saw Paul Newman tucking in to lunch there (but I just remember him when he was much, much younger, so wasn't sure)!

JC, if you search the forum you may come up with multiple threads to answer this very question.
Where you stay in the county will influence where you'll eat - if you stay in wine country, then my recommendations here will serve you well. If you're going to stay in the city of SB itself, I'll serve up a different set.
That said - here's my favorites.....

Fine Dining:
the Restaurant at the Ballard Inn - if you have one meal in the area, this is the place to go.
Brother's at Mattei's Tavern

Nice Meal in a More Casual Setting:
Trattoria Grappolo - Santa Ynez
Hitching Post - Buellton
Firestone Walker Brewery - Buellton
Chef's Touch - Solvang

Nice Place to Have Lunch:
Vineyard House - Santa Ynez
Panino - Los Olivos
New Frontiers Market - Solvang
Los Olivos Grocery - Los Olivos

Sushi:
A-Ru Sushi - Buellton

Grab a Taco Between Appointments:
Taco Roco - Buellton
Taco Loco - Solvang

Nice Breakfasts:
Solvang Restaurant - Solvang
Paula's Pancake House - Solvang
Greenhouse Cafe - Solvang
Ellen's Pancake House - Buellton
Longhorn Cafe - Santa Ynez
Los Olivos Grocery - Los Olivos

Wine Bars:
Tastes of the Valley - Solvang
Los Olivos Cafe - Los Olivos
Sissy's Uptown Cafe - Lompoc

Wineries :
Depends what you like. Let's talk.
"I say: find cheap wines you like, and never underestimate their considerable charms." - David Rosengarten, "Taste"

October can be pretty hectic at wineries given the spate of late harvests. It could be difficult to get tasting appointments, but worth a try.

Thank you for your replies. John, I will probably be most interested in tasting Pinot Noirs and possibly Syrahs. I may stay one night in Santa Barbara and the other nights in wine country. I have already visited the mission in Santa Barbara and the town of Solvang back when I lived in Monterey County so will spend more time in wine country on this visit. Some tasting rooms seem to be open on Fridays and Saturdays so those may be the busier days of my trip. Maybe I can arrange a couple private appointments on Thursday if I write well in advance. I realize that October is a busy time but it didn't seem to interfere with visits last fall when I was in Sonoma.
