David B...I need some advice please!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Fri Mar 21, 2008 11:07 am

David, last evening I came across these wines but retailer did not know the prices yet. An advance shipment I believe?

No doubt you will be able to comment!

1) Willi Haag `04 Brauneberger Juffer R Spat. MSR.
2) Dr Wagner `06 Oekfener Bockstein R Kab. MSR.
3) Dr Wagner `06 Hocheimer Konigin Victoriaberg R Kab Rheingau. A Halbtrocken.
4) Ayler Kupp R Aus, Gefchwifter Simno. MSR

I would like to think there might be some gems here!

Thanks Bob P.

Well Bob - no gems. The Willi Haag should be nice enough though not profound, and the Dr. Wagner wines are usually good values (don't pay top dollar though). That Ayler Kupp wines is a total stranger to me.

I've seen the Haag rieslings at good prices in this area, but I have never heard any recommendations. What would be the qpr point for the qba and kabbinet?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows

For Willi Haag in the current economic market I would pay up to about $16 for kabinett. I've never been a fan of Marcus Haag's (the current winemaker) QbA.

Thanks David. I have seen it for less, around $12 I think. I may buy a bottle this afternoon for sipping this weekend with Easter dinner.

Bob:

Ayler Kupp shows up here in Ontario quite often, the most recent being the Geschwister Simon Rieslign Kabinett 2006 at $14.95.

I checked the data base of a local wine critic and, FWIW, he rates most of the Kabinetts in the average to good area and the one Spatlese that has shown up here (a 2004) he awarded a good to very good rating.

I can't find Ayler Kupp in my German wine guide, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that it is a cooperative.

Ayler Kupp is a vineyard near Ayl in Saar; the producer is Geschwister Simon and why its wines have crossed the Atlantic beats me: the two I tried were entirely forgettable.

Someone thinks they can convince people otherwise. Unscrupulous at best.

The fact that they were forgettable is probably the reason they ended up overseas!
