WTN: Surprising Local (Solano County) Wines

by Brian K Miller » Sun Mar 16, 2008 10:12 pm

I did a long hike in the Rockville Hills area of Solano County today. Northern Californians-this is an amazing park for rock climbing and wildflowers! I really recommend a visit this month. There are just fields of wildflowers!

So...after the hike, I loaded my exhausted dogs in the car and we hit a tiny winery at the end of a dead end road in Green Valley-GV Cellars.

Under new ownership for about three years, they are just releasing "their" vintages now. And, I actually found an outstanding "Supertuscan" with 60% Sangiovese, 20% Syrah, and 20% merlot. Their merlot and Sangiovese are decent as single varietal wines, but together this wine was pretty darn nice for $16. A great blast of cherry fruit controlled and mellowed by their very lean Merlot, with the on its own over the top Syrah adding richness. And, being a fan of savoriness, this wine delivers. This Soliloquy blen would be great with steak or rich pasta.

The 2002 Syrah was also outstanding, with dark meaty and peppery flavors and a nice hit of blackberry fruit. Very nice. As noted above, the 2005 was a little too rich and alomst sweet, but it had the same interesting structure and savolryness underneath. Good wines!

Isn't it fun when you find a place like that?
