1999 P&V Maurel CdP, Les Galets Blonds (Patrick Lesec Selection)
I admit that I never heard of this producer before, although I do recall Patrick Lesec, the negotiant, someplace in the very dark recesses of my mind. On another discovery trip through the cellar, I uncovered 3 of these on the rack, so decided it was time to to see what was going on, as most of the 1999 CdPs I've opened lately seem good to go.
This was wonderful!! An absolutely glorious and complex nose. Lavender, garrigue, along with a healthy dose of sweaty saddle leather, pony heiney, and dried cherries that turn brighter with a bit of air. Manageable tannins. Very rustic/unmodern with zingy acidity...both qualities that I like in my Rhones and this wine delivers them in non-gobs of enjoyment. Did I mention the lingering finish.
Caution: Acid-o-phobes should run and hide from this one.
I'll drink my other two bottles over the next 3 or 4 years.
Damn, I liked this wine.
