QPR wines: Amberton Sauvignon Blanc

by Chris Blake » Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:55 pm

Has anyone tried this wine? I got one for $11.99, which seemed like a good price for Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc. It was pretty crisp, good fruit, some complexity, very palate-cleansing. It's still pretty cold here but I'm looking ahead to using this one as my summertime salads-on-the-patio wine.
Other recommendations? I like a Sauvignon Blanc that has some herbal complexity, but I don't want to feel like I'm mowing the lawn with my mouth, like I do with a few from New Zealand. I want fruit, too.

From California I like St. Supery, Honig and Joel Gott Sauvignon Blancs. The St. Supery has been edging up in price but still may be under $20. I like Sancerre/Chavignol whites from France from various producers (Cotat, Lucien Crochet, Reverdy, Mellot, etc.) but they may be over $20. The Nobilo Icon is a nice one from New Zealand, more expensive than their entry-level Sauvignon Blanc, but still can be found for under $20. I find all of these to have good citrus fruit qualities and not be too vegetative.
(One time I did get a Nobilo that tasted too much like asparagus but that was not the Icon bottling.)

I liked the Joel Gott before but the last time I tried it I think the quality had slipped; we couldn't finish the bottle. I used to drink more Sancerre but the dollar's so weak that familiar wines have ugly unfamiliar prices.
Asparagus in wine? Ewww.

I have tasted lots of lousy Napa sauvignon blanc, so I was pleasantly surprised when I recently sampled some that I liked from a producer that I never would have sought out. The wine was the 2005 Markham Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and I found it to have a nice nose, quite crisp with good fruit and solidly refreshing--though perhaps not perfectly balanced on the finish (would need to sit down with a glass or two to make a proper call on the wine). I have never made a concerted effort to seek out Napa sauvignon blanc--mainly due to the sum of my previous negative experiences--but at around 15 bucks, I thought it a decent bottle of wine and one that reminded me to keep an open mind not only about regions, but about 'big-name' producers.

Oh, and one other thing, I'm not an expert on sauvignon blanc, but I have really enjoyed the ones that I have had from the Südtirol/Alto Adige region in northeastern Italy. They might offer what you are looking for, but that whole euro-dollar thing doesn't help with the prices. Others can offer more comprehensive guidance, but I have had good initial impressions from the following producers: Kellerei/Cantina Terlan, Pojer e Sandri, and Kellerei/Cantina Tramin.
