2004 Simon Bize Bourgogne Blanc

by Bob Henrick » Wed Mar 12, 2008 2:35 pm

I am subscribed to Chambers Street Wine's newsletter, and when it arrived in my inbox, I saw the subject wine at $18.99 per. I've never had this particular wine, however I am a fan of unoaked chardonnay, as this one is. Depending on what I hear here, I will make some attempts to get a case of it for one of my summer whites/ Thanks in advance.

I was also surprised to see unoaked. But just looked at 2006 report "View from the Cellar" and Gilman states there is a basic Bourgogne raised in stainless. My experiences with Simon-Bize have been uniformily positive, but were mostly reds, and all Savignys.Very good producer, but while I like unoaked Chardonnay, I usually look to the Macon at less than $19. Still, just the fact Chambers sells it is a plus.

David, I don't know for sure that the wine is unoaked, but chambers says it is, so I have to take it that it is.

Hi Dale, as I told David C, I am just taking Chambers Street and their word about it being unoaked. I have just recently taken to dealing with CSW, and they are real easy to work with. They cover the aspects even shipping very very well.

Bob, I sold a goodly number of cases of that wine through my store till the vintage rolled over. While I'm not familiar with a stainless version, the wine we sold was raised, as far as I know, in older, previously-used barrels which imparted no overt oak spice/flavors, but did add roundness and a certain mild and (IMHO) beneficial oxidative maturation. On the palate, the wine was middle-weight with good citrus, floral, almost-ripe peachy fruit, with a nice mineral/earthy backbone that Maconnais wines rarely express for me. In short, it was a winner and well received.
Be good to yourself...

Peter

According to Gilman, in 2006 there are three Simon-Bize Bourgogne Blancs- a "basic" one (raised entirely in stainless steel), and two Bourgogne cuvees called Champlains and Perrieres, each raised in old oak. Not sure if these were the same in '04.

Dale,
I will email Jon at CSW and see for sure which Bize this one is. "When in doubt, shout louder" :-)
