WTN: Laurent-Perrier 1996 Vintage Brut

by David Lole » Wed Mar 05, 2008 5:08 am

My wife, Janet, loves Champagne and a recent visit to the cellar saw me grab a half dozen bottles I was interested to try (or try again) and share with her over the next month or so. Like DCB's wife, Laura, I have enough trouble in getting Janet to nose a red, let alone drink it! Although, it must be said, the very best mature red Burgundy's I've opened in the past have generally met with her enthusiastic approval.

This bottle bears testimony to the great vintage and this most talented producer. An infantile colour of bright straw green with streams of very fine, aggressive beading is followed by a lovely full nose of charred toast, gorgeous yeast autolysis, quite "biscuity" but with undertones of Chardonnay "florals" and freshly picked strawberries. The palate raises the bar to another level! Delivering a tightly-coiled, power-packed explosion in the mouth, this exceptional sparkler could easily pass as a prestige cuvee in a blind tasting. Wonderfully fresh with incredible reserves of crisp green apple, strawberry and green melon fruit tinged with more of that incredibly complex, yet subtle, autolysis character, one would expect this wine to live for at least a decade, more likely, two! A superb creamy mouthfeel, invigorating swirling mousse, plenty of residual acidity on a monumentally long finish provide the credentials for an exceptionally complete Champagne that ekes class, poise and controlled power. 96 points (equal to my take on the Dom Perignon!) Wow! I wonder how this house did with their 96 Grande Siecle?
Cheers,

David

FWIW, I just learned there was no '96 Grande Siecle made.

I thought the GS was a blend of three vintages always?

I bought and drank several of the 1990 Grande Siecle, although the NV Grande Siecle is always as you suggest.

For those who are interested, there is an intense (and very interesting) discussion about LP Grand Siècle on that other forum:

Have fun!

Vintage GS is a rare beast (though clearly not exclusive to the American market).

The vintage must be a rare beast indeed: this is the first time I have heard of its existence! Any day that one learns something new isn't wasted... :) I've only seen the 3 vintage MV (I suppose it should be rather than NV?) here.
