WTN: d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet 1997

by David Lole » Mon Mar 03, 2008 5:19 am

A recent auction purchase for just over 50 Aussie smackeroos. 13.3 A/V, cork closure.

Solid light to medium ruby core with abundant rust and brick in the outer edges. Gorgeous sappy, musky nose containing no shortage of sous bois, wet earth, spicy morels, baby beets, dark plums and bing cherries with a top note of cardamon and spicy, dusty oak. In the mouth the wine initially displays rather soft, rounded mouthfeel with a delectable peacock-tail finish suggesting near maturity, but with considerable breathing, picks upsome quite firm tannin suggesting further aging will do no harm. There's considerable fruit (aka nose) intermingling with some decent acidity to counterbalance the eventual long and quite sturdy finish. All-in-all I found this wine to be of an extremely good quality with up to five years cellaring required to be drinking at its best. It should keep for another 5, thereafter. 88 points.
Cheers,

David

thanks.
I'm not biggest fan of '97 in general, but there certainly are some tasty ones.

I have liked the few d'Angervilles I've had. But why do you say that the peacock tail finish implies maturity? I have found that in young (unspoofy) Burgundies also quite often.

I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Otto,

Read "soft, rounded .... and delectable PTF" as implying maturity. Sorry if sometimes my "very average" grammar leads a degree of misinterpretation.
Cheers,
