WTN: Wither Hills

Notes from a tasting of Wither Hills, New Zealand, at Wine Depot.

Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2007 - Lots of fruit. Fragrant overripe guava. Bright wine with good acidity making it friendly with food. Very nice.

Wither Hills Chardonnay 2005 - Orange on the nose. Good dose of oak but not to excess. Slightly woody. Good length. Well balanced. Enjoyable and easy.

Wither Hills Pinot Noir 2006 - Deep color. Not too interesting on the nose. Good fruit, smoky. Dryish finish. Good but not too interesting. I remember earlier vintages of this Pinot having much more stuffing and complexity.

I thought the whites showed much better than the Pinot Noir this time.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Jay, this winery just showed up here in the north. I think way too many of us concentrate far too much on SB at the expense of some great chards from NZ.
