WTF: Chave, Chapoutier and Saugere

by Redwinger » Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:26 am

I was rooting (or is that routing? ) around in the cellar yesterday trying to get some off the stuff off the floor and into the racks when I discovered a 1996 Chave Hermie, a 1996 Chapoutier la Mordoree Cote Rotie and a 1991 Saugere Cote Rotie back in a dusty corner. I thought I had finished my small stash of each of these a few years ago. Sometimes being disorganized is fun!! I love it when this happens and no, I don't need no stinking spreadsheet or software. :D

I had this last night in Rossford (poke, poke) and I'd say give it another 5 years or so -- it was still fairly primary.

Mark,
I hope you enjoyed Toledo. There are soooooo many great wines opened it is hard to try or even keep track.
Thanks for the update on the Chave...perhaps I'll return it to that dusty corner.

What? You think that 100+ wines over 2 days among 25 people is too much? Lightweight! :P There were so many wines opened both nights that I could not find the time or the stamina to try each one before certain bottles got drained. That, coupled with my desire to proceed in an order from sparkling to white to light red to full red, cost me a few choice tastes, but such is the burden of the committed wine geek. Lotsa fun, though.

Mark,
Very poor strategy. I've found that you must locate the bottles participants have bogated under their table and behind sofa cushions. That is the good stuff!! If they are guarding these wines with fervor, just yell "I think this is corked" and they will abandon their treasures momentarily for a sniff/snort to confirm/deny your claim of TCA. This should provide just enuf time for you to swoop in for a pour. That's my strategy and I'm stickin' to it.

Winger,

Wow. 1996 Chave H.??? Nice, very,very nice.

I am popping about one a year and they are still needing several hours (4-6) of breathing to show what they've got. But when they open .. It is like smoked pepper bacon wrapped around dry aged Porterhouse, grilled at a million degrees for and put under Maytag Blue cheese butter and herbs/spices that we only dream of.

And all in a glass.

Chave rocks.

The offer still stands if you make it back this way supper time.

Best

Paul,
Thanks for the feedback on the 1996 Chave. I'll plan on trying it about 5 years down the road.
I really do need to make a trip West on I-74...with some of the Iowa/Minn.family connections now just memories, we don't get that way as often as we should.
Thanks again,
Bill
