Thursday I was going to meet a group in city, so had only a small glass of wine with a chicken pot pie and salad. Luckily that wine was quite good, the 2006 Domaine du Vissoux (Chermette) "Cuvee Traditionelle" Beaujolais. A bit lighter and less structured than the 2005 version, but a rather lovely and forward Gamay. Red fruit, mostly cherry with a little edge of Ocean Spray cranberry, a floral note. I had another glass as I decompressed after a cold night out, a fuller wine, with smoky notes on top of the of the red fruit. Very tasty, and though I said I was on a wine buying hiatus I need more of this. B+
Friday Betsy prepared basa (apparently Asian catfish) in a panko crust, along with a kale soup with parmesan and proscuitto. Wine was the 2004 Roger Belland "Comme-Dessus" Santenay blanc. I don't normally buy white Burgundy from producers I don't know, but Daniel Posner at Grapes in Rye is having a moving sale. I've thought highly of this store's tastes in chardonnay before, so took a chance. Paid off. Good acidity, ripe Bosc pear fruit accented with lemon and just a hint of vanilla. Rich, oak a mere accent. Develops a earthiness that reminds me of a good Chassagne. It's not especially long or deep, but for an early drinking white Burg (and these days I'm scared to age them!) a good buy at about $20 on sale. B+/B
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
