Chinese Put Down Roots In Bordeaux

by Howard » Wed Feb 27, 2008 7:07 pm

Interesting article in Internation Herald Tribune about a wealthy Chinese entrepreneur buying an estate in Bordeaux. It confirms what I've been hearing about the fact that the top 150 houses are flourishing but the mid and lower ranges estates are suffering. Interesting times for wine-drinkers.

That's an interesting--and probably inevitable--development. Thanks for the post.

Yeah, it`s a clever move. With the right product and skillful PR, this chateau will sell well back in the homeland!

The other thing that's interesting to me is that buying a working wine estate in Bordeaux is 3million bucks. Somehow I thought it would be a lot more.

I read the article quickly.

I don't believe it says what is obvious: there is a not unwelcome confusion between Château Latour Laugens and *the* Château Latour in Pauillac as seen from the other side of the world...

Meanwhile, the West deindustrializes, China has become the world's workshop and it is only normal that these hard working, up-and-coming people get their due.

This property is located right out on the edge of the Bordeaux area between Sauveterre-en-Guyenne and Duras, the Entre-deux-Mers area which Nathan considers not really Bordeaux. I guess that the selling price per bottle is quite low, maybe >€ 5/bottle. Looking at the photo of the château itself, that would be worth < € 1 million as residential property if it is in fair condition, which leaves >€ 1 million for 30 hectares of vines. Not too bad a deal for the seller, IMHO.

It will be really significant when the Chinese start buying famous châteaux.

Not really Bordeaux? :!:

By what yardstick?

I am just parroting Nathan Smyth from the "hate Bordeaux" thread.
