Wherein a 2003 Chateau Malmaison becomes a 2004 Clarke

by Peter M Czyryca » Tue Feb 26, 2008 7:11 pm

Just popped a cork on a 2003 Chateau Malmaison and was surprised to see the cork is printed as:

2004
Chateau Clarke
Listrac Medoc
Baron Ed. de Rothschild

I understand the connection between the two Chateaux, but a 2004 cork with the other Chateau's name on it? For a 2003?

Maybe they used one of those mobile bottling set-ups and the other cork somehow got mixed in?

Odd right?

I wish I knew what wine I drank:

2003 Malmaison
2004 Malmaison

2003 Clarke
2004 Clarke

Because it was pretty tasty for $16 and I'd like to buy more, but what if the bottle I popped was say, 2004 Clarke, and the others are all 2003 Malmaison? Or 2003 Clarke

I once had a similar "problem" with a wine, but was told that usually the cork has the correct name. Apparently the labels are often added later on so mistakes happen with greater frequency with them.

Otto - so you'd suspect it was really 2004 Clarke juice in the bottle?

Thanks!

When there is a piece of evidence missing, we can only talk in probabilities. But I was told that PROBABLY what is on the cork is the correct one. Not knowing for certain is annoying, so if I wanted more, I would get one of the Clarke and try it again. If you do get more and try it, I would like to hear your view on whether it is similar!

I'll have to track down a 2004 Clarke to compare, unfortunately the store I bought from only stocked the 2003 Clarke.

Good idea though....
