2001 Wild Hog pinot noir
Sonoma Coast, California
Strange, but attractive nose of pomegranite and prickly pear--almost pinotish but not quite. If we hadn't known what we were drinking we'd not have guessed right away. Slightly cloudy appearance, barely medium orange-y red color. In flavor, sweeter than expected with pomegranite, tangerine, spice and that slightly bitter prickly pear thing we got in the nose. Not uninteresting, but not a good example of California pinot noir either and heading south longevity-wise.
Great label art, though; a black and white etching of a rustically carved pig. Very modern and artfully different--have to admit, that's kind of what hooked me. Hoke or anyone: who are these people?
